The TAL Side Table by Emmanuelle Simon brings together blackened solid oak and pale ceramic in a study of material contrast. Rather than staining or painting the wood, the oak is worked and darkened to heighten its natural grain, fissures and split lines, giving each piece a character shaped by the individual timber.
Above, a pale crackle-glazed ceramic disc rests directly on the split crown of the oak, with no visible hardware interrupting the meeting of the two materials. The contrast feels deliberately elemental: smooth ceramic against deeply textured wood, precision against irregularity. It is an approach characteristic of Emmanuelle Simon’s work, where the strong geometries and sculptural presence of Art Deco are softened by a wabi-sabi appreciation for natural materials, hand-worked surfaces and imperfection.
